About the book and the love story : I don't know the truth (And I must read the book again as soon as possible !) but I like to think that if you and Michael Sheen saw something, so something was here.
However, the book was writed in 1990. It was a complicated decade : maybe it was to difficult when it came to openly publishing a queer romance in mainstream literature (Unfortunately, we know it isn't a piece of cake today too). Perhaps the authors didn't know enough about these issues to dare take this step, or perhaps it would have been commercial suicide and a third party involved in the project objected.
Besides, there are many forms of love. And I think as we grow older, we learn to see them. Perhaps Neil is evolved and seen and understood himself in a different way the relationship he'd written about so long ago.
Indeed, many authors say too that they create their characters, and that sometimes these characters come to life under their pen and become something they hadn't planned at all.
About the translation : Yes, I'm agree with you. I don't know why the French want so much translate names and titles... sometimes is so embarrassing...
About my English : you're so sweet, thank you ! ;)
Reading your "or madness", you made me laugth so I was going to write "you're funny" and suddenly I thought of Gabriel's line to Aziraphale : "you're funny...I love you" XD (I'm so obsessed it becomes a reflex XD !)
We are not mad, just passionate !
