Agnes Nutter is one of the main characters in Amazon series Good Omens. She is a witch from the 17th century. She wrote The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch.

Background[]

Agnes Nutter was born in 1600 AD and died in 1656 AD, she was the last true witch burned in England. A true prophet, she could see the future, but it's still unclear how much she could understand of it, especially far into the future.

Anathema Device is Agnes Nutter's great-great-great-great-great-granddaughter.

Significance in series[]

"The Book"[]

Agnes Nutter is arrested in 1656 and burned at the stake as a witch. Before the burning, Agnes concealed fifty pounds of gunpowder and thirty pounds of roofing nails in her petticoats so when it caught fire, the stake explodes.

After Agnes Nutter is burned at the stake, she leaves behind a box with The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch to be given to her daughter, Virtue, and son-in-law, John. The prophecies are accurate but meaningless to the couple in 1658.

Agnes wrote The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch just for the free Author's copy, which is entrusted to her descendants and is well looked after. The book contains several thousand prophecies, mostly relating to her family through the centuries, and each and every single one true.

"The Very Last Day of the Rest of Their Lives"[]

There was a second manuscript written but never published, kept in a box and entrusted to a law firm for safe keeping for 300 years. The box was delivered 300 years later to her descendant, Anathema, in 2019 after the Armageddon-that-wasn't.

Personality[]

Agnes had a wicked sense of humor. When her house is approached by the people planning to kill her, she jokes that they are late, and that she should have been burned to death 10 minutes ago. She also wasn't shy about letting others know she had abilities, and often cured her neighbours of ailments.

Quotes[]

"Thou art tardy. I should have been aflame ten minutes since." - "The Book"

"Come close, until the fire near scorch ye. For I charge ye that all must see how the last true witch in England dies." - "The Book"

Prophecies[]

Many of the prophecies are vague and unhelpful until you are smack in the middle of them, or until you can look back with some context and understand them in hindsight. This made the book essentially useless to anyone outside the family and it never sold a single copy. However the book itself and the cards the book was printed from were heavily speculated over by the family and are shown to contain notes from Devices through the years.

Notes and trivia[]

  • Agnes Nutter used her gifts for medicine and health; it is mentioned in the scene leading up to her death that she had a talent for curing various ailments among her neighbours and that she liked to go jogging (as a result, she is viewed by the townsfolk around her as bizarre and exhibiting clearly demonically-influenced behaviour).
  • Josie Lawrence also played Agnes Nutter in the 2015 BBC radio play adaptation of Good Omens.
