Synopsis[]
Heaven sends the angel Muriel in disguise to spy on Aziraphale and Crowley. Aziraphale drives to Edinburgh in pursuit of his Clue, and learns a little about a lot. The couple's visit to Edinburgh in 1827 involves grave robbery, a statue and an unfortunate encounter with a vial of laudanum. In the present, Crowley is in charge of the bookshop, and is disappointed by human beings and the weather.
Plot[]
Beginning in modern-day London, Aziraphale is visited by the Angel Muriel. It’s their first time on earth, and they are pretending to be a police officer, dressed all in white. As it turns out, they are here to verify Aziraphale’s miracle, but the Angel doesn’t really know what they're looking for. Luckily, Crowley buys them some time, informing Muriel that there was a couple, Maggie and Nina, over the road. He told them that confirming their love would take a while since "humans are weird and that's how it works". This gives Aziraphale a chance to continue his investigation. He takes Crowley’s Bentley and very slowly drives to Scotland.
Along the way, Aziraphale plays classical music and changes the color of the car to yellow. Crowley soon senses these transformations and orders Aziraphale to turn the car back to black.
When Aziraphale finally arrives in the capital, he heads straight for The Resurrectionist Pub.
In flashbacks, Aziraphale is in Edinburgh as well, but the year is 1827. Aziraphale and Crowley visit a statue of Gabriel, where they find a woman called Elspeth digging up graves at night for cadavers. Aziraphale tries to persuade her to change her ways, stating that this act is immoral, but Elspeth needs the money she earns from selling these corpses to survive.
Aziraphale and Crowley discuss the morality of it all, and how some people are good, and some are evil. But Crowley argues that people aren’t all born equal. They head to a surgeon, who is desperate for fresh corpses. Aziraphale begins to meddle, though, turning the body into a skeleton to spite Elspeth.
While chatting with the surgeon, it becomes apparent that these cadavers are actually serving a purpose. They are helping teach and train the doctors of tomorrow so that they can save lives. Aziraphale has a change of heart and decides to help Elspeth dig up more bodies.
Unfortunately, Elspeth’s friend Morag is shot by a grave gun and dies. Elspeth sells her corpse and swipes the surgeon’s poison. She hates her life and wants to end it all. Crowley forces Aziraphale to hand over all his money so that Elspeth can start a new life and not have to resort to suicide. This act of kindness is noticed by Hell almost immediately. Crowley is subsequently captured for this good deed and dragged down to Hell. Aziraphale adds that he didn’t see Crowley for a long time after this incident.
Meanwhile, in the present, Aziraphale questions the owner of The Resurrectionist. He remembers seeing Gabriel in his establishment.
Back in London, Crowley attempts to create the right circumstances so that Maggie and Nina will fall in love. Crowley waits until Maggie and Nina are together outside, and then he makes it rain. Maggie asks if she can speak with Nina about the other night. Nina apologizes for the way that she acted. Maggie strongly hints at her love for Nina, but then their interaction is cut short by even more rainfall.
Annoyed by this inconvenience, Crowley turns away from the window. He then witnesses Gabriel having another episode. Gabriel’s body is taken over, and he delivers a message. It would seem that an apocalypse is heading their way, one where the dead will rise from the ground.
To make matters worse, Shax appears outside the bookshop. Crowley argues with his fellow demon. Shax explains that Beelzebub is not happy with Crowley because they know that he is hiding Gabriel from them within the store. Crowley denies their accusations. Shax ends the conversation with a clear threat, Hell will declare war upon Aziraphale if Gabriel is not handed over right away.
