Neil Richard MacKinnon Gaiman[1] is an English author of short fiction, novels, comic books, graphic novels, audio theatre, and a screenwriter. Gaiman created and wrote for the Good Omens series based on his and Pratchett's 1990 novel of the same name.[2] In addition, Gaiman also serves as showrunner for the series.

Biography[]

Gaiman's works include the comic book series The Sandman and the novels Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch, Stardust, Anansi Boys, American Gods, Coraline, and The Graveyard Book. He has won numerous awards, including the Hugo, Nebula, and Bram Stoker awards, as well as the Newbery and Carnegie medals. He is the first author to win both the Newbery and the Carnegie medals for the same work, The Graveyard Book (2008).[3][4]

In May 10, 1990, Gaiman and Terry Pratchett wrote Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch in collaboration.[5] Pratchett and Gaiman had planned to adapt Good Omens as a movie for years, with various directors and writers attached to the project along the way. In 2011, a television series, written by Terry Jones and Gavin Scott, was first reported to be in the works but no further plans were announced.[6]

After Pratchett's death, Gaiman refused to ever consider working on the adaptation alone but changed his mind when he received a letter from Pratchett, written to be sent after his death, urging him to finish the project.[7] On 19 January 2017, it was announced that Prime Video had given a green-light to a television series adaptation of the novel to be co-produced with the BBC in the United Kingdom. Executive producers were set to include Gaiman, Caroline Skinner, Chris Sussman, Rob Wilkins, and Rod Brown in Season 1. Gaiman was also set to adapt the novel for the screen and serve as showrunner for the series. Production companies involved with the series were slated to consist of BBC Studios, Narrativia, and The Blank Corporation. Distribution of the series was to be handled by BBC Worldwide.[8] In Season 2, Gaiman was joined by John Finnemore.[9]
